Amazon Warehousing and Distribution (AWD) was pitched as the cheap upstream buffer for FBA sellers: bulk storage, auto-replenishment into fulfillment centers, and no inbound placement fee. In 2026 the math changed three times. Rates went up on January 15, Amazon stopped doing prep and relabeling for anything heading into FBA, and since July 31 AWD no longer accepts sellable units at or above 18 × 14 × 8 inches or 20 lb. If you set your storage strategy in 2024 or 2025, it's worth re-running the numbers SKU by SKU before your next purchase order.
What AWD Costs in 2026
AWD charges for four things: monthly storage by cubic foot, inbound processing per box, outbound processing per box when stock moves to FBA, and transportation per cubic foot. According to Amazon's AWD program page, there are no enrollment fees and no seasonal surcharges, and AWD pricing covers FBA inbound placement — the per-unit fee you'd otherwise pay for shipping to FBA with minimal splits.
$0.48–$0.57
AWD base storage per cubic foot per month, West Coast at the top
$1.40
Per box for inbound processing, and again for outbound to FBA
$1.40
Per cubic foot transportation from AWD into the FBA network
$2.40
FBA standard-size storage per cubic foot per month, October through December
On storage alone, AWD still wins in Q4: 100 cubic feet sitting in an East Coast AWD facility for three months costs about $144, while the same volume in FBA standard-size storage from October to December runs roughly $720. But storage is only one line. A one-cubic-foot carton that goes in, sits, and moves to FBA also pays about $4.20 in inbound, outbound, and transportation fees — before your own freight to AWD. For fast movers that turn in weeks, those handling fees can erase the storage savings.
The 2026 Rule Changes That Matter
Three changes reshaped who AWD fits. First, Amazon ended FBA prep and labeling in the US on January 1, 2026, and AWD's service terms now say it will not relabel units — inventory must arrive already prepped to FBA standards, and every labeling error surfaces later at the fulfillment center. Second, transportation rose from $1.15 to $1.40 per cubic foot and box fees rose by $0.05. Third, the July 31 size gate reported by Cahoot removed Small Bulky, Large Bulky, and Extra-Large items from AWD altogether. Existing oversize stock can drain into FBA, but no new oversize units go in.
You can't move inventory from FBA to AWD because items are stored differently in our fulfillment and distribution centers.
— Amazon, AWD FAQ
That one-way flow is the hidden constraint. Once stock leaves AWD for FBA, it only comes back out through removal orders. Amazon says AWD can also send stock to other channels like Walmart Fulfillment Services, but it ships in cases, not individual DTC orders — so it can't serve as the warehouse behind your Shopify store or handle custom kitting and retail-compliant wholesale orders.
AWD vs. Direct FBA vs. a 3PL Buffer
| Factor | AWD | Direct to FBA | 3PL Buffer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 💲 | Q4 storage cost | No seasonal surcharge | $2.40/cu ft standard | Flat contracted rate |
| 📐 | Oversize items | Not accepted since July 31 | Accepted, high fees | Accepted |
| 🏷️ | Prep and labeling | Must arrive prepped | Must arrive prepped | Done in-house |
| 📍 | Inbound placement fee | Included | Per-unit by split | Depends on FBA shipment plan |
| 🔄 | Replenishment to FBA | Automatic | Not needed | Scheduled by seller or 3PL |
| 🛒 | Other channels | Case-level, e.g. WFS | Via MCF only | Shopify, Walmart, wholesale |
In practice, the cleanest setup in 2026 is a split. Small, standard-size, predictable SKUs with long ocean lead times are still good AWD candidates — especially if you're already prepping at origin. Oversize items, SKUs that need kitting or relabeling, seasonal inventory with uncertain sell-through, and anything that also ships to DTC or wholesale fit better in a 3PL that prepares FBA shipments on demand and keeps the rest of the stock available for every channel.
The Q4 2026 Deadlines to Plan Around
Amazon's arrival cutoffs for Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026 are October 14 for AWD, October 21 for FBA minimal-split shipments, and October 28 for FBA optimized-split shipments, as reported by Cahoot. Amazon recommends booking delivery appointments at least seven days ahead and partnered-carrier pickups at least 14 days ahead. If you missed the AWD window, your realistic options are direct FBA by the 21st or 28th, or holding stock at a 3PL and replenishing FBA in smaller waves through December.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing AWD or a 3PL
Which SKUs still qualify for AWD?
Pull the packaged dimensions and weight for every ASIN from Seller Central. The size test applies to the sellable unit, not the master carton, and a unit at exactly 18 inches or 20 lb fails.
Who preps and labels before AWD?
AWD won't fix FNSKU labels or polybags. Ask your factory or 3PL who signs off on prep, and what happens when a carton arrives at FBA with a labeling error.
What is my real cost per cubic foot turned?
Add storage, inbound and outbound box fees, transportation, and freight to AWD, then divide by how fast the SKU sells. Fast movers often come out cheaper going direct from a 3PL.
Can the 3PL build FBA shipments on short notice?
Ask how quickly they can pick, label, and ship a replenishment to FBA after you create the plan, and whether they handle optimized-split shipments across multiple destinations.
Does the same stock serve my other channels?
If you sell on Shopify, Walmart, or wholesale, ask whether one inventory pool can feed all of them without a removal order or a second warehouse.
What is the Q4 storage rate in writing?
Many 3PLs raise rates or add peak surcharges in Q4. Get October to December pricing locked in your contract before you send inventory.
AWD isn't dead — it's narrower. For small, prepped, single-channel SKUs it's still one of the cheapest places to park inventory. For bulky items, products that need prep, and brands selling across channels, a 3PL buffer gives you control that AWD no longer offers. The right answer is usually both, decided SKU by SKU.
